Coronado is made for walking!

July 25th, 2012 Posted in Hotel Information, Live Like a Local, Local Coronado Activities | No Comments »

Scenic Coronado Walking Tour

A great way to see the sights of Coronado is with some comfortable walking shoes on a summer day.  Spend an hour or the whole day on a Coronado walking tour from one end of the island to the other.

Coronado Golf Course “Best Place to Play”

One of the favorite Coronado walks is from the 1906 Lodge to the Ferry Landing, walking along San Diego Bay.  From the Lodge, you walk a couple of blocks down to the yacht club and then turn left.  Beautiful Glorietta Boulevard winds along the 18 hole Coronado Municipal Golf Course, selected by Golf Digest as a “Best Places to Play.”

The Coronado Bridge Up Close

Just past the golf course, you have the rare sight of the underside of the Coronado Bridge.  Peering through this unique view, you can see Coronado’s Naval Amphibious Base on the right (where the Navy SEALs train) as well as the main San Diego Naval Station on the left, home port to the majority of the west coast ships.

Tidelands Park has spectacular views

North of the bridge is Tidelands Park.  The wide boardwalk is great for walking as well as biking or rollerblading.  The 22 acre park has spectacular views of the San Diego waterfront, a skate park, wonderful playground, and lots of space for a picnic.  One of the whimsical public art pieces facing the water is “My Bike”, a shiny bike and rider which turns in the wind.

Coronado is the centerpiece of the “Big Bay”

As you wind around towards the north end of the island, you’ll see the Coronado Ferry bringing tourists to and from downtown San Diego.  To your left is the North Island Naval Air Station, the birthplace of U.S. Naval Aviation in 1911.

Dine, Shop, Play, Enjoy – the Coronado Ferry Landing

If you have made it this far, reward yourself with a stop at one of the wonderful restaurants at the Ferry Landing.  There is also shopping and concerts by the bay on Sundays.

For your return trip, you can retrace your steps or head directly down Orange Avenue, the mainstreet of Coronado.  You’ll pass shops, restaurants, the library, and Spreckels Park.  Or wander through the lovely neighborhoods of our quaint village.

Enjoy afternoon refreshments at 5:00 each day at the Lodge

Make it back to the Lodge by 5PM for afternoon refreshments.  Wine, lemonade, iced tea, crackers, cheese, and snacks await you.  You have the opportunity to chat with other guests, plan your evening meal, or just sit on our front veranda and watch the world go by.

We hope to see you soon at the top ranked hotel in Coronado, the 1906 Lodge!

5 Late Night Destinations in Coronado

May 8th, 2012 Posted in Hotel Information, Live Like a Local, Local Coronado Activities | No Comments »

Coronado Night Life?  YES!

Most visitors think we roll up the streets at 9:00 PM…

but there are actually quite a few places to grab a late night bite to eat, a cocktail, or live music.

In the past year, three new eateries and bars have opened that cater to the late night crowd, as well as prime time guests.

Leroy’s Kitchen and Lounge

-          Featuring fresh, local, and sustainable food, Leroy’s also boasts 16 beers on tap, live music on Thursday and Friday from 8-11PM, and late night Social Hour specials from 10-midnight Thursday – Saturday.

The Tavern

-          Comfort food, classic cocktails, craft beers with a neighborhood bar and restaurant ambiance.  Open until midnight Sunday through Thursday, and until 2 AM on Friday and Saturday. Enjoy Happy Hour Sunday-Thursday from 3-6 and then again from 10-closing.

Nicky Rottens Bar and Burger Joint

-          This sports bar features hand pressed burgers (including various veggie burger choices), house favorite sweet potato fried, views of downtown San Diego, a lively atmosphere and is open until 2 AM every night.

McP’s Irish Pub

-          A favorite local hangout for decades, especially for our Navy SEALs, McP’s offers a traditional Irish menu and live music Tuesday – Saturday.  It’s open until midnight weekdays, and until 1AM on Friday and Saturday.

Babcock and Story Bar

-          A classy bar in the Hotel del Coronado, enjoy its 46 foot long handcrafted mahogany bar circa 1888, live music, and views of Coronado Beach. It’s open until midnight on weeknights, and 1 AM on the weekend.

With the exception of Nicky Rottens, these popular destinations are all within 2 blocks of the 1906 Lodge.  What are you waiting for?  Book your room at the 1906 Lodge today and check them out!

Coronado’s Public Art

May 8th, 2012 Posted in Hotel Information, Live Like a Local, Local Coronado Activities | No Comments »

Check out Coronado art.   We have 30 incredible outdoor artworks.

Just 2 blocks away….

Just 2 blocks from the 1906 Lodge on Glorietta Bay sits one of the simplest and most gracious of Coronado’s public artworks.

“Freedom” Sculpture

Jon Koehler created 3 stainless steel sails that move effortlessly with the wind.  The sculpture is placed on the Glorietta Bay Promenade with the beautiful backdrop of boats, bay and blue sky.

Mosaics, fountains, and more

You can find art as varied as mosaics, fountains, sculpture and even bus stop enclosures along the Silver Strand featuring shore birds in flight.

Walk or bike to everything

Most of the Coronado art is within walking distance of the 1906 Lodge.  Or you can rent a bicycle and cruise the island, following the Public Art Map provided by the city of Coronado.

Just another way to enjoy all that Coronado has to offer!
