Coronado’s wide and sandy shoreline once again has made Dr. Beach’s list of top 10 U.S. beaches, moving up one spot this year to No. 3.

Coronado has been improving its ranking each year on the list created since 1991 by Stephen Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach. The director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research uses 50 criteria to evaluate beaches, including water and sand quality, water temperature and cleanliness.

No other California beaches made the list, which was released Thursday.

Dr. Beach’s top 10 beaches for 2010

1. Coopers Beach, Southampton, N.Y.
2. Siesta Beach, Sarasota, Fla.
3. Coronado Beach, CA
4. Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, N.C.
5. Main Beach, East Hampton, N.Y.
6. Kahanamoku Beach, Waikiki, Honolulu.
7. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Mass.
8. Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, S.C.
9. Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii.

Guests of the Lodge were treated to great weather and great fun last weekend.  The annual flower show in Spreckels Park drew all ages.  Our two year old guest combined flower viewing and a romp on the playground.

On Sunday, Motor Cars on Mainstreet was the main attraction with hundreds of vintage cars on display just 2 blocks from the Lodge.  Owner Dave Gillingham’s 1972 VW bus was on display but it was outshown by this wonderful 1947 Mercury woodie.  Guests Tom and Peggy from the midwest couldn’t resist a photo in front of the perfectly restored California cruiser!

The Monte Carlo, a gambling ship anchored offshore in 1936, was set adrift in a storm on New Years Eve 1936 and ended up on the Coronado beach.  Most of the time it is covered in sand and surf.  But every few years the winter tides and storms reveal the skeleton.    Here’s a great aerial photo  of the hull.

Enjoy the small town atmosphere of Coronado on the weekend of April 17 and 18th.   Starting with the 86th annual Flower Show in Spreckels Park, see the largest flower show in the west, plus food and entertainment.  Also in the park is the Library Book Fair of thousands of gently used books for sale.

On Sunday, take a walk down memory lane at the MotorCars on MainStreet show of vintage automobiles.   You might even see one of Lodge owner’s Dave Gillingham’s vintage VW buses!

Vote for the Lodge at Coronado Island Florist’s Gingerbread House Contest

A couple of years ago I decided to enter a gingerbread house contest by creating a model of the 1906 Lodge.  How hard could it be?   I consulting with a friend who is professional chef.  She loaned me a couple of fancy tools, gave me a recipe for both the gingerbread and the icing.   She seemed to think it would take a few hours.  Well, over the course of 7 days I managed to spend more than 40 hours on my masterpiece.   While I was proud of the final product, this is not something I would lightly attempt again!  So I have saved it and pulled it out again this holiday season and am entering it in Coronado Island Florists contest.  Please go by and vote for me!  And if you plan to enter a gingerbread house of your own, I hope you’ve already started it!  Entries are due December 2.
