While most people think of coming to Coronado for outdoor activities, don’t overlook our two live theater venues.

Lamb’s Players Theatre is one of Southern California’s leading non-profit performing arts organizations.  Its resident company is showing “A Servant of Two Masters”, a new musical comedy, through November 20.  Then in December, enjoy Lamb’s 34^th annual Festival of Christmas show, full of holiday music and a heart-warming story.  Lamb’s is located right around the corner from the 1906 Lodge.

Coronado Playhouse, starring our community’s talent, is showing “The Drowsy Chaperone“, 2006 winner of 5 Tony Awards, through December 4^th.  The Playhouse is located in our wonderful Community Center, a 10 minute stroll away.

Reserve a room with us, enjoy our 5 PM wine, stroll towards either theater and stop for dinner along the way.

If you’re a fan of this zany 1984 movie starring Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, you should definitely plan to view it in Coronado on Halloween night on the big screen.

The Coronado Village Theater will be showing it October 31 at 7:00 PM for only $5.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to see a movie in our town’s newly restored historic theater, we hope to see you there!

Once a year, the Coronado Bridge is open to bicyclists of all riding abilities.  Bike the Bay San Diego is a 25-mile route that passes through the cities of  Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, National City and San Diego, and finishes at Embarcadero Marina Park South with a festive celebration with food, entertainment and a Karl Strauss beer garden.

The ride is flat with the exception of the gentle climb of the west bound Coronado Bridge.  Then it’s downhill into Coronado.  Enjoy the 7 mile stretch along Coronado’s Silver Strand with the Pacific Ocean on your right and San Diego Bay on your left. You will finish your journey nearby our Coronado hotel.

In 2010, more than 2,700 riders came out to support The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, www.sdcbc.org,  — working to make bicycling better for all in San Diego.  Be sure to register in advance at http://www.bikethebay.net/index.html.

FYI, the 1906 Lodge has secure underground parking for your bicycles! Our Coronado hotel is a great place to relax after a long day of biking around the gorgeous scenery.

The annual parade kicks off at 10:00 AM and is sure to be its usual All-American, Norman Rockwell event….  Marching bands, floats, horses, vintage cars.

If you are driving on to the island that day, be sure to cross the bridge before 9:00 AM.  The main street, Orange Avenue, is closed by 9:30 and parking is a major challenge.

Of course, if you are staying with us at the 1906 Lodge, we have free underground parking!  And our beach chairs are perfect for parade viewing.

Celebrating 100 Years on Orange Avenue!

On Friday, June 17, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Coronado Historical Association invites residents and visitors to help celebrate the 100^th birthday of their beautiful Neo-classical building at 1100 Orange Avenue, with old-time music and refreshments provided by the Association.

Prompted by our innkeeper Susan, the 1906 Lodge San Diego, Coronado hotel, had 2 entries in the 86^th Annual Coronado Flower Show.  It is the largest flower show held under tents in the nation.

Our white orchid won both “Best Orchid” and “Best Flowering Plant” trophies.  The orchid, a grand opening gift from Lance Alworth (retired Charger and Pro Football Hall of Famer) has been nurtured by our innkeepers for 2 years.  It seems to love the northwest light of our kitchen.  The exotic curve of the stems and its beautiful blooms won over the judges.

Our third trophy belongs totally to Susan for her table setting based on the beach theme of the 1906 Lodge.  It won a yellow ribbon from the judges in its sub-category, but won the “Most Popular Place Setting” trophy from attendee voters, competing with dozens of other entries.

Earlier in the month, the 1906 Lodge won a blue ribbon for its beautiful gardens.   With lush plantings surrounding the buildings and courtyard, the landscaping adds to the peaceful ambiance of the hotel.  The day lilies are especially happy right now as you can see in our photo of our blue ribbon in our front picture window.  See our facebook page and website for more pictures of our San Diego Coronado hotel and our award winning flowers!

Don’t miss this great Coronado Activity, the 86th Annual Flower Show.   Times:  Saturday 1-5 and Sunday 10-4.  Located in the 600 block of Orange Avenue, it will be a great way to spend an afternoon or the entire day.    This year a Beer Garden has been added (also serving wine) in the afternoons.  Also included… a marketplace, plant sale, and music.

For the first time, the 1906 Lodge will have an entry in the flower show, designed by our very creative innkeeper, Susan!    Check out our entry in the Table Setting tent, in the “Blue Plate Special” category.

Flowers are everywhere in Coronado this week, as the Annual Home Front Competition just occurred.    The 1906 Lodge received a BLUE RIBBON.  Come see our gardens, overflowing with blooms.    And spend the night!   Suites are still available.

The 2nd annual “Time Out for Women” overnight retreat was held at the 1906 Lodge in March.  Hosted by Coronado St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, the conference center was perfect for their program.  And the relaxing Arts and Crafts decorated parlor was perfect for an old fashioned pajama party until midnight!

Groups can reserve the entire property for retreats, business meetings, classes, or family gatherings.  The main conference room can accommodate up to 35 people, and the 2 adjoining breakout rooms provide room to spread out.
